"'Mac" Randolph Tributes
"'Mac" Randolph was a longtime educator
By Adele L. Mackanos, Times Correspondent
Malcom "'Mac" Randolph was a longtime educator in Northwest Indiana and in his leisure was a classic Corvette enthusiast. "Mac loved 'Vettes. He had a silver T-top '78 that was in absolutely mint condition," said Gerald Alexander, who added the model his friend and neighbor owned was quite the collectible. It marked the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the Corvette in the nation's auto scene. While Mr. Randolph took pride in his Corvette, Alexander said he also toyed with the idea of purchasing a newer model.
"He hoped if he could beat the cancer this time, he would buy another 'Vette. ...Unfortuantely, that didn't happen," Alexander said. Alexander said Mr. Randolph had been so optimistic at one time that he had a vanity license plate made for his vehicle that said "survivor." Mr. Randolph, 57, of Crown Point, died after a seven-year battle with cancer.
He had been an active member of the Crown Point Corvette Club, an organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the classic sports cars. "This past year, we made Mac an honorary member of our club," Alexander said.
Family member, Francis Schafer remembers Mr. Randolph's other attributes. "Mac was an absolute gentleman who also had a great sense of humor," Schafer said.
And Debra Dougherty recalls her brother's tireless dedication to his teaching career. "My brother loved his job and really enjoyed all the students he taught. He always put them first and wanted what was best for them," Dougherty said.Mr. Randolph was a teacher at Kahler Middle School from 1970 to 1975, and served, until recently, as a coordinator for Title 1 remedial reading and English language learner's programs in the Munster school district.
